Gas Leak Detectors

Gas leaks can be one of the most dangerous risks to your family’s health and safety. If not repaired quickly, a gas leak in your home can increase the risk of potential fires and could put your family at risk of natural gas poisoning.

How do you ensure that your home remains a safe place for your loved ones? At Magical Plumbing, we understand the hazardous nature of gas leaks, which is why we offer effective gas leak detector installations and services.

How Do Our Gas Leak Detectors Work?

Gas lines can experience leaks due to faulty connections, corrosion, ground movement, and old infrastructure. Leaks can occur throughout your gas line as well as at your appliance connection point. By investing in one of our gas leak detection systems, you benefit from constant air monitoring for the presence of any natural gas or propane.

Here’s a look at the most common types of gas detectors we install and how they work.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors

Carbon monoxide is a highly flammable gas that is both odorless and colorless. It’s produced during the combustion of fuels, including propane and natural gas. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be deadly when inhaled for too long, which is why early detection is paramount.

Also known as electrochemical sensors, CO detectors are usually positioned near gas appliances and sleeping areas. Once installed, the detector will constantly measure the concentration of CO in the air in parts per million. Once CO levels are detected for long enough to potentially cause harm, an alarm is sounded. The alarm will sound anywhere between concentration levels of 70ppm for longer periods of exposure and 400ppm when CO is detected for a few minutes or less. The alarm will provide you with enough time to take action to call one of our plumbers to perform a gas line repair.

Natural Gas Detectors

Primarily composed of methane, natural gas is highly flammable and explosive, which is why we recommend it if you have a gas stove or water heater. Our natural gas detectors use either semiconductor sensors or catalytic bead sensors, both of which are able to detect methane gas. Let’s take a look at these two detectors in more detail.

Semiconductor Sensors

Technologically advanced semiconductor sensors detect gases through changes in the electrical conductivity and are incredibly sensitive to a wide range of gases. They also offer a rapid response time and are compact and affordable.

Catalytic Combustion Sensors

These slightly older sensors use a tried and tested gas detection technique by measuring the gas concentration level when heat is produced. Catalytic sensors require oxygen to function and need to have proximity to gas appliances.

The Magical Plumbing Gas Leak Detection Advantage

As South Florida Plumbing professionals, we enjoy a strong reputation due to years of plumbing services offered to the Broward and Palm Beach Counties. It’s this strong legacy which means that entrusting us to oversee your gas detection needs comes with three great advantages, including:

1. Comprehensive Coverage

Your home may need several gas detectors, depending on its layout and size. At our initial consultation, we’ll assess your home’s exact gas detection needs by identifying potential risk areas and gas appliances in your home. We’ll provide you with a strategic detection coverage plan to ensure your entire home is gas leakproof.

2. Strategic Placement

During our assessment, we consider gas density levels. By identifying the hot spots, we’re able to effectively place gas detectors at key positions. As natural gas floats, we will look at placing sensors closer to your ceiling. Propane, on the other hand, is heavy and sinks, meaning we’ll most likely place any required detectors low to the ground.

3. Complete Smart Integration

We hard-wire our detectors into your home’s electrical system, meaning that you won’t have to replace dead batteries. If you have a smart home system, we can easily integrate our detectors, allowing you to receive alerts on your phone wherever you are. All our gas detector units are visually pleasing and designed to blend into your home.

Risks Of Not Installing A Gas Detector

Choosing to chance it without a gas detector could put you and your family at severe risk. Although some gases have a pungent odor, some gases can be odorless, meaning that a dangerous gas could be seeping into your home without you knowing about it. The detrimental effects of natural gas leaks include:

  • Possible explosion in your home.
  • Property damage in the event of a fire.
  • Increased gas bills.
  • Dizziness or unconsciousness during prolonged exposure.
  • Lethal towards houseplants.
